Hey River!

As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve been considering the character and heart of a father—a good father is generally admired for his tenacity and perseverance. We look to these fathers for their bravery, their willingness to sacrifice it all, and inability to give up. There’s a reason the best dads in movies show up when all the odds are against them—how these dads always, always find a way to rescue their kids in the darkest places.

At the heart of a good father—especially our Heavenly Father— is love. There are so many ways we describe God; we call Him Provider, Creator, Healer, Lord, Teacher, Redeemer, our Peace, our Rock and our Salvation. But, I argue, the title of Father covers it all.

Philippians 1:9 (AMP) “And this I pray, that your love may abound more and more [displaying itself in greater depth] in real knowledge and in practical insight…” (emphasis added)

I read this verse and can’t help but feel like Paul is giving us this wisdom that is to infect our perception, our every revelation God gifts us with—and that is every revelation is rooted in love. Love truly is at the root of every good thing, and at the center of every good father’s heart.

God is our Provider and Redeemer because of His indescribable love for us. He is Lord of all not out of a self-serving nature but out of a Father’s heart for His children. He provides, heals and rescues because His love for each of us is so deep, so wide that it covers everything we need. He knew we would need peace in the storm, so He is peace for us. He knew we would need a rescuer, so He sacrificed His most precious gift to make it happen.

Romans 8:15 (TPT) “And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!””
