Movement is Life

Pastor has been teaching on a new series entitled "GO!" On Sunday we read about the Israelites wandering in circles in the wilderness until the entire older generation died and God addresses the 20 and younger crowd with "arise and go" to take the promise land. Up until this point the Israelites were stuck. They were not moving forward, and a lack of movement has created stagnation. Think of water. Water that is alive and full of life is moving and has a current. Water that is stagnate and stuck without movement is full of death, like swamps. Quite literally the Israelites that were stuck in the Egypt slave mind set died. Those that embraced the promise and moved forward in action lived. Jesus put it this way: new wine can't be put in old wine skins, only new wine skins.
As a therapist I talk with people on a daily basis that express being depressed or anxious or caught up in an addiction. The common denominator is being stuck. A general feeling of things will never change and so no action is taken to disrupt behavior. Many times, this cycle goes on for years and even passes to other generations. Sometimes as a therapist I have to shock the system and disrupt behavior by getting clients to do something out of the ordinary. In other words, arise and go! Do something different. Until this happens the client remains stuck but even if they start doing something we can start building from that initial action to introduce new beliefs and behaviors. I believe God was shocking the system. He was disrupting problematic behavior. He is still doing it today through the Holy Spirit promoting us to step out of the boat and do something different... something daring. Even though Peter started to sink it doesn't matter. He stepped out of the ordinary into something extraordinary and accepted the challenge to move. Go. Not be stuck. Because movement is life!
