Hey River!
Something we've been talking about in youth group is guarding our heart--specifically, how our focus can dictate our choices. As believers, we share a common goal of developing purity in our hearts. To choose a pure heart is to choose a life of sacrifice, of worship, of devotion. It can be so easy to be distracted by feelings or situations that feel so big and important to us for a moment or a season that we lose sight of the one who is to be at the center of our hearts: God. We get caught up in questions like, "What is God going to do for me in this season?" but the whole purpose of any sign, wonder, or demonstration of God's hand in your life is to point your attention back to Him. Our worship is superficial when we are focused only on what He can do for us--but the fire, the sacrificial worship of a heart purely devoted to the Father is what touches his heart.
Jeremy Riddle has a book about worship (The Reset) and he describes the power of pure worship. In the second chapter he writes: "Pure worship is solely driven by the 'I HAVE TO LET YOU KNOW...I have to communicate to You somehow, someway...how much You mean to me...how much You've touched my life...'" Our job is to remember those beautiful moments He touched our lives as the mark of a father who loves us so deeply, and to give Him everything we can to express our gratitude and love for Him. That is the beginning of pure worship--more than any song, that we live our lives intentionally trying to show God our desire and love for who He is.
Psalm 63:3- "Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” NIV
